United States Baseball Association News Article | | | Thursday, August 20th, 2009: Kelly Torches Gamblers for 5 Hits 5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory...your 5 minutes of fame...you get your name in the record book.
In the Bandits 19-6 win over Wichita, Richard Kelly was red-hot today, scorching them for hit after hit at The Hideout.
"To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime chance for the record book. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone."
On his record-setting day Kelly delivered 5 hits in 6 at-bats, a day he will not soon forget.
R. Kelly singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, struck out in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, doubled in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off B. Troy in the 7th.
This year Kelly has collected a .269 batting average to date with 32 hits in 119 at-bats, 13 RBIs, 1 home run and scored 18 times. He has played in 42 games. | |
