USBA Single A News Article | | | Wednesday, June 17th, 2009: Hallmark Hittin' on All Four, Hits Cycle Getting 4 hits in a game is no easy feat, but hitting for the cycle is much more rare. Paul Hallmark of the Texarkana Toads was in rare form today, hitting for the cycle against Myrtle Beach. But it wasn't a happy day -- His team still lost 10-9 to the Blue Demons at Wolfhounds Ballpark.
In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that exact order is known as a "natural cycle", which very seldom occurs.
It still was not a bad day for Hallmark -- he got 4 hits in 7 at-bats with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Despite the loss, his big day at the plate will still get him a mention in the record book.
He told reporters after the game, "It just happened. Must have been fate or something...you can't plan this. I was more concerned with winning the game. I hate to lose. 2-for-4 and a win is good enough for me."
P. Hallmark flied out in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, struck out in the 7th, hit a solo-shot off M. Bendjedid in the 9th, tripled in the 11th and struck out in the 12th.
This season in 55 games, Hallmark has hit at a .291 clip with 60 hits, 7 home runs, 47 RBIs and 42 runs scored. | |
